When predicted conditions and hot, dry and windy weather forecasts show that fires may be difficult to control and may harm the community, the Queensland Fire Department might declare a local fire ban.

Local fire bans can be declared for all or part of a local council area and will apply for a set timeframe. 

When fire weather conditions become extremely dangerous a state of fire emergency for all or part of Queensland may be declared and will be in force until cancelled. The term Total Fire Ban is not used within Queensland. 

During a fire ban or state of fire emergency, it is illegal to light certain types of fires and all permits are cancelled. Anyone who breaches a fire ban declaration may be subjected to large fines and even imprisonment.

Any time you are going to light a fire in Queensland (including camp or backyard fires) you must check if there is a fire ban.  

What you need to know about fire bans

• Fire bans affect everyone: residents, workers, campers and farmers. 
• The local fire ban starts at midnight and last for a few days to more than a week. 
• Fire bans can be cancelled or extended depending on conditions. 
• Exemptions can be granted for some industries and activities. 
• Any Permit to Light Fire held by residents or landowners are suspended until the ban is over. 
• Fire bans are declared using local government boundaries.
