It's quite common to feel anxious when you're around an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) that is responding to an emergency.
If you find yourself in this situation, there are four (4) simple things to remember:
- Look and listen - remember that having your music up loud or air-conditioning on and windows up, may make it difficult to hear approaching ERVs and their sirens.
- Stay calm - if you can't move out of the way safely, stay calm and wait until you can. Avoid making any sudden or unplanned movements, like braking suddenly.
- Merge left - ERVs will attempt to pass vehicles on the right wherever possible. Work with other drivers to create space for ERVs to pass. Remember to use your indicator to signal to other drivers what you intend to do.
- Stay alert - your safety is important so avoid putting yourself in dangerous situations. ERVs will not go through railway stop lights or boom-gates. Make sure you follow their lead and only enter when safe to do so.
If you’re passing a parked emergency response vehicle with flashing lights, you must move over and slow down as soon as you can do so safely.
