The following Table lists the NCC section and parts, and the relevant QDC parts that we consider has important operational requirements that designers and assessment managers should consider.

Table 2 - Operational requirements in the built environment
NCC Section or QDCRelevant fire safety aspectOperational requirement in the built environment
C1Fire resistanceWe consider the prevention of structural collapse, the containment and prevention of fire spread and facilitating fire brigade intervention are key operational requirements in buildings
C2Fire resistance and stabilityPrevent the partial, progressive or total collapse of the building to allow firefighters to undertake search and rescue and extinguish the fire using the equipment provided
C3Compartmentation and separationContain the fire to a size and intensity within our operational capacity and the extinguishing capacity of the equipment provided
C4Protection of openingsPrevent the spread of fire via opening in internal and external building elements to maintain structural stability, compartmentation, and fire separation
D1Access and egressWe consider the exits, their fire isolation and their travel paths are key operational requirements for fire brigade intervention
D2Provision for escapeProvide evacuation routes that allow for safe occupant evacuation, compatible with contraflow access for firefighters to areas of the building affected by smoke and fire
D3Construction of exitsProvide evacuation routes that allow for safe occupant evacuation and that allow firefighters to stage search and rescue and firefighting activities from a place of relative safety
D4Access for people with disabilitiesProvide facilities for the safe, equitable and dignified assisted egress of people with disabilities in a fire, compatible with our operational procedures
E1Firefighting equipmentProvide firefighting equipment that can control and extinguish the fire, is compatible with our procedures and equipment, and that is located in accessible places of relative safety for firefighters
E2Smoke hazard managementProvide a fire detection and alarm system that will provide early warning to building occupants and that is monitored to provide automatic notification of fire to us. Contain the spread and accumulation of smoke to allow for safe occupant evacuation and to allow firefighters to undertake search and rescue activities and to extinguish the fire
E3Lift installationsProvide facilities for the efficient movement of firefighters, firefighting equipment and occupants requiring assisted egress in conditions free from the effects of fire and smoke
E4Visibility, exit signs and warning systemsProvide clearly identifiable and direct evacuation routes that allow occupants to complete their evacuation in conditions free from fire and smoke
G3Atrium constructionProvide necessary provisions for fire safety and fire brigade operations in buildings containing an atrium
G5Construction in bushfire prone areasProvide water supply for firefighting and vehicular access to buildings that have additional provisioning for sheltering vulnerable occupants from the effects of a bushfire event
MP2.2Residential care buildingsProvide an automatic suppression system and other necessary provisions to contain fire and smoke spread to allow for safe occupant evacuation and for firefighters to undertake search and rescue and extinguish the fire
MP3.7Farm buildingsProvide facilities for the safe evacuation of occupants and firefighting equipment that is compatible with our procedures and equipment and is capable of extinguishing the fire
