Canine handlers and helpers

The AUS-1 DART team maintains 6 to 8 competent search and rescue canine handlersCanine handler and dog at work and canines as part of the deployable roster. We’re always looking for new canine teams to join us and start training with the goal of reaching qualification. 

Role requirements

To become a deployable team member as part of AUS-1 DART, the volunteer canine handler and their dog must: 

  • pass the initial handler and canine screening day
  • meet the criteria to pass probation
  • pass progress check 3 within the first 12 months
  • pass progress check 5
  • sit a Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) within the first 2 years
  • pass the minimum Canine USAR qualification level – FSA.

Canine handlers’ activities and role

You’ll be required to:

  • search disaster environments and locations indicated in the mission assignment, using appropriate canine search equipment and techniques
  • report and document results of the canine search, including locations of alerts, and routing them appropriately
  • understand and accurately interpreting your dog’s behaviour, including knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of search canines
  • adhere to all safety procedures
  • cooperate with and assist other search and rescue resources
  • be responsible for the care and welfare of your dog, including assisting the medical team in your dog’s medical care
  • be accountable for the maintenance and minor repairs for all issued equipment
  • perform additional tasks and duties as assigned during a mission.

Canine helper activities and role

This position is suitable to people:

  • a new team member who is progressing towards getting a dog for training in canine urban search and rescue and can assist the team, or
  • a new team member who has no interest in getting a dog but would like to assist the team in training. 
  • who have previously been canine handlers with the AUS-1 DART team and don’t currently have a trained dog, or a dog in training.

As a helper, you’ll:

  • follow the same role requirements as canine handlers (listed above)
  • be responsible for assisting in all practical aspects of canine training and assessment in support of the AUS-1 DART K9 USAR standards, including attending regular group training sessions at Queensland Combined Emergency Services Academy (QCESA).
