The AUS-1 DART team maintains 6 to 8 professionally accredited emergency physicians as part of the deployable roster.

You must:

  • be a licensed physician with advanced training in emergency medicine
  • be actively practising clinical emergency medicine and having significant experience with pre-hospital medical care
  • have a general knowledge and understanding of medical conditions common to USAR incidents such as lacerations, fractures, shock, crush injury and crush syndrome, burns, penetrating and blunt trauma, head injuries, respiratory embarrassment, hyper/hypothermia, and infections
  • have experience treating common medical emergencies, eye injuries, minor orthopaedic injuries, etc
  • have an awareness of other disaster response organisations
  • must have some knowledge of USAR operations, strategy and tactics
  • have an awareness of the hazards associated with the various disaster environments
  • be familiar with the structural features and conditions that contribute to a high probability of victim survival in a collapsed structure
  • knowledgeable about the development and use of integrated action planning concepts and processes
  • have a knowledge of supervisory and personnel management skills
  • be capable of operating independently without mentoring or consultation
  • be capable of working as part of an integrated team under the command and control of the AUS-1 DART Team Leader
  • capable of providing medical intervention for search dogs if required, in the absence of a veterinarian.

Doctors’ activities and role

You’ll be required to:

  • develop and implement the medical component of the AUS-1 DART Search and Rescue (SAR) Team Action Plan
  • directly supervise the taskforce paramedics
  • adhere to all safety procedures
  • maintain chain of security for prescription and controlled drugs
  • coordinate, manage and supervise all medical activities
  • determine the medical organisational and logistics needs
  • receive briefings and situation reports and ensure all medical personnel are kept informed of status changes
  • provide situation reports and maintain records and reports
  • prepare performance evaluations for assigned personnel
  • direct medical care delivery to AUS-1 DART Team personnel and search dogs
  • ensure a continuum of medical care and coordinate interaction with all relevant outside medical entities
  • be accountable for maintenance and minor repairs of all issued equipment.
  • perform additional tasks and duties as assigned during a mission.
