New Chum (Ipswich) – chemical leak as at 7.05pm Sun 9 Jan
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) crews remain on scene at a chemical spill at an industrial site at Rhondda Road, New Chum. Crews responded to a Triple-0 call at 6:45pm Saturday, after the spill began to produce a large gas plume which is currently heading towards Blackstone, Bundamba and Ebbw Vale. Crews located multiple containers of nitric acid, several of which had ruptured. QFES currently has 11 appliances and 30 personnel onsite, including chemical scientists from the QFES scientific branch and multiple hazmat crews. Crews are working to separate the storage containers and neutralise the captured nitric acid with a large quantity of soda ash solution under the direction of QFES scientists. The chemical runoff is being captured and is not entering any waterways or land areas. Residents are asked to close windows and doors and if suffering from a respiratory condition, keep their medications close by.
