Queenslanders urged to prepare and listen to warnings ahead of wet weather conditions
With wet weather impacting parts of Queensland once again, authorities are urging residents to be prepared and stay aware of conditions.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Commissioner Greg Leach said Queenslanders had already proved their resilience in the face of severe weather and urged them to stay safe during the current and predicted wet weather conditions.
“This summer’s flash flooding is a deadly reminder of its unpredictability and power,” Mr Leach said.
“Catchments are already saturated, and we have seen how quickly people can be caught out when flash flooding occurs.”
Mr Leach said previous wet weather meant even a small amount of rain could cause catchments to rise.
“Now is not the time to be complacent. Whether you are travelling across the state or even close to home, it is never worth driving through floodwater,” he said.
“If roads are affected by floodwater, stay away.
“Your life is at risk when you go near floodwater.”
Mr Leach said it was time now to take the necessary precautions to ensure you and your family were prepared.
“Clean up around your property, including your gutters, and make sure you are listening to the latest information and warnings from the Bureau of Meteorology, and advice from QFES,” he said.
“Our State Emergency Service (SES) and Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) swiftwater rescue technicians are always ready to assist when needed.
“But we need all Queenslanders to take all possible precautions to stay safe.
“This includes never driving through floodwaters. Back it up, never attempt to drive through it. If t’s flooded, forget it.”
