Fire Education Bundaberg

 

The Fire Ed program is designed for teachers working with students in Year 1 in Queensland schools.

The aim of the program is to assist students to develop an understanding of the dangers of fire and the appropriate response should they be in a situation where fire is involved.

The Fire Ed program engages students in interactive, collaborative learning experiences to promote their understanding of good and bad fires, the dangers of smoke, dialing Triple Zero (000) in an emergency, the role of the emergency services in helping in a fire emergency, safety around fires and having a school and home escape plan.

Fire Ed for children with neurodiversity

Fire Ed for children with neurodiversity is a modified educational program designed for educators working with children who face learning challenges as a result of neurodiversity in early learning facilities within Queensland. This modified version of the program aims to introduce fire safety education to provide a foundation for children to better understand the Fire Ed program when they reach Year 1 schooling. The program was developed in partnership with the AEIOU Foundation to better meet the learning needs of children with neurodiversity

The program is delivered over into three stages:

Stage 1

Contact is made either by the learning facility contacting us at Community Engagement or their local fire station or the local fire station contacting the learning facility. A preparatory lesson is then delivered by the learning facility. Educators prepare students with basic fire education learning using the downloadable teacher resource. The resource promotes interactive and collaborative leaning activities to promote safety around fires, smoke alarms, the sequence of events in a fire, and the role of emergency services during a fire emergency. These sessions can be delivered as multiple short sessions as appropriate for the children.

These action cards have been developed to help children understand the actions required in an emergency situation and include visual, textual, and verbal cues. A PDF is available for download to help facilities create their cards, however a printed copy can be requested by contacting us at Community Engagement.

Stage 2

Firefighters will deliver a modified Fire Ed presentation in the classroom environment. The program is shorter than a traditional Fire Ed program and includes interactive imitation activities. This session will conclude with a demonstration of the fire truck. 

Stage 3

Ongoing learning in the home environment. Continual reinforcement is an important part of the learning process for young children. A letter to parents will be provided from the firefighters to encourage the continued learnings of fire safety within the home.
